the title says it all. my 87 bird has the 700r4 in it now and im trying to decide if i should swap to a stick or not. i have all the parts to swap it over. my biggest ques is which one will i go faster with? i planned on modifying the 700r4 with a tci converter and a shift kit my friend got me thinkin i should swap to stick. which trany would make my car faster a t5 with a good rebuild and a centerforce clutch or a 700r4 with a tci breakaway converter and a shift kit. i was debating on stick because when i want the trany to shift sometimes it does and sometimes is doesnt with the auto.

 

depends what you like rebuilding better................700's or T5's

 

I dont think that your setup will exactly eat transmissions. 300 ft lb torque V-8's don't, so rebuilding doesnt seem like something to occur all the time. I was at the same dillema as you a while ago, and chose to keep the automatic as the aggravation factor of the stick swap proved to be to high. My plans with my tranny, trans go kit and perhaps a vette coverter or a 2500 stall unit. I just hold my auto and downshift it when I please. I know approx where it will rev to. Like if im going 45-50, and some bozo decides to pass me, I drop it into 2nd, cause the tranny wont necessarily do it for me. The tranny is still holding up, for how long, I dont know however.
