lost 3rd in th350

yeah i lost third, but its weird, if i go from neutral down to 3rd while im driving, 3rd will kick in, then i'll be crusing and it just downshifts to second, i dont have the kickdown cable hooked up, i never did and didnt have any problems like that, the fluid is at a good level, could it be my vacuum line going to the modulator is frozen somewhere, i live in ct its pretty cold lately. thanks

well first off, why would you not hvae the kickdown cable hooked up?? That's just plain stupid, if it wasn't needed then it wouldn't be there in the first place. By not having that cable hooked up you probably blew the intermediate sprag in the trans, which will either eliminate 2'nd (go right to 3'rd from 1'st), or no 3'rd gear. I lost 2'nd gear before in a th350. Either way, even if it may happen to be something else and not the sprag (which it probably is), you have to get that trans serviced before something else blows and costs you another $300. If I were you i'd quit driving it right now and start rippin it out.

The kickdown cable doesn't have anything to do with the sprag. All it does is yank the trans down a gear when you floor it. It's a kickdown cable, not a modulator or throttle valve cable.

If 3rd works at all ever, it's not a hard parts problem. Sounds to me like a valve boyd issue.

Have you looked into a adjustable Shift modulator? It may have a vac leak or be out of adjustment, or plain out no good?? How do the other gears shift? Any problems at all?

I'd put a tee with a vacuum gauge in the vacuum line going to the modulator. After checking the vacuum to the modulator, I'd
pull off the line to the modulator and plug the tee after the gauge. The vacuum readings should be the same. If not, there is a leak in the line or hose or the modulator. If the modulator's
diaphragm is leaking, the hose will possibly have ATF in it.
