Posi install???

Is this a direct bolt on for my 91 Camaro or how hard is it to install on of these?

Looks like the standard Eaton Limited Slip. You need to make sure its for a 7.5" 10-bolt and has the correct gear range (2-series, 3-series, etc...) Also be aware of spline count. Older thirdgens had 26 spline and newer had 28.

As long as the series of the carrier was the same and the splines yes it's a very simple unbolt-rebolt deal, just make sure you put the shims from the left side back on the left side and same for the right. You can get spacers also,(like I had to) took a posi from a 2 series and installed it in a 1 legged 3 series rear, I bought the spacer from some company in Nevada for like $65, everything held up for a season of drag racing/street stalking.

if its that easy then how come people always suggest having some professional do it?

i've always heard that you have to use micrometers and stuff like that................

Well the reason they say that is you do have to have micrometers and stuff like that to "properly" install a replacement carrier.

Actually it's a dial indicator that you need to replace your carrier. Since you are not changing gears, there is no need to mess with the pinion at all, but it's critical to set your backlash and bearing preload. Contrary to what has been posted, you can't just slide the new carrier in and go. That is if you want the gears to last.

You need to check the backlash before you pull your existing carrier, then remove it. Then you swap the ring gear onto the new carrier, press new side bearings on the carrier, then put it together with new races and check your backlash and gear contact pattern. You are trying to match the backlash as closely as possible to the measurement you got before you pulled the old carrier out. The reason for this is you are trying to get the gears back as close as possible to where they were originally running so you don't force them to creat a new contact pattern.

If you don't check your backlash, you run a very high risk of trashing your gearset and anything else in the rear end.
