first time swapping auto tranny......
okay i plan on swapping my tranny out of my 84 to a 87 or 700r4.......i read in the tech articles that i may have a problem with my driveshaft......is this a definate or did it just happen to some cars........are there any other things like that, that i should know of..........also.......i heard something about if you do not set the torque converter right you can screw stuff up.......so how would i "set" it right?
thanks
thanks
The driveshaft will work fine.
As far as the torque converter:
Fill it with 1 qt before install. Push the converter into the pump while slowly turning it. It should clunk in 3 times. Once properly seated, the torque converter mounts should be about 3/4" to 1" below the bellhousing.

in my haynes manual it says that i will have to take off the exhaust around the catalytic converter.......is there any way of getting around this.......cuz i believe i will have to torch mine off cuz its rusted on there...........also it says that i should make sure the torque converter and the flexplate are still in the same alignment........well im going to put a new converter in there so how will i know how to align it?
also.....if i fill the tranny with the fluid will it get to the converter or do i have to physically fill the converter itself?
thanks

Don't know what to tell ya on the exhaust. When I swapped my trans I already had an aftermarket system on it. All I did was unbolt the y-pipe and let the exhaust hang.
The indexing of the converter and flexplate is probably just for balance purposes. Obviously there is nothing to index with a new converter.
For filling the trans: Before you install the converter, pour in 1 qt. I can't remember how much I filled the trans with before starting, but I think it was around 5 or 6 qts. Then check the fluid, add a qt, check the fluid, add a qt, check the fluid etc until you reach the proper fluid level. I think capacity is 12 qts, but check the manual on that one.

As long as you get the converter to seat all the way I dont see how it could be off. It just slids on.
You will probably have to disconnect the y pipe and converter. I have longtubes and duals on mine so it was easy for me to remove my entire exhaust.
I had to disconnect my headers to that kinda sucked.
This was my first time for pulling a trans also. It wasnt to hard at all. Just take the driveshaft loose from the rearend (4 bolts) then slid it forward and then slide it it. take the flywheel to converter bolts out (3) then Disconnect the bellhousing bolts (6). Pull the dipstick tube out, then disconnect the shifter cable, wires, and then the trans crossmember. Make for a jack with a piece of wood or a tranny jack is under the pan. Then slower it down some until you can get to the TV cable wire and tranny lines and disconnect them. Then bring it the rest of the way down and your done.
I havent went to reinstall it yet but I dont think it will be to bad. Just get it up enough to get the crossmember back on and go from there.
BTW Marc....I love that car man. Those rims look awesome with that two tone. I have two tone like that but mines red. I wish it was blue.

The reason I had to disconnect the exhaust is because in order to get to the bellhousing bolts you need to tilt the engine and trans a good bit. My Y-pipe interfered with my oil pan, preventing enough tilt to get to a couple of the bolts. You may not need to do this with a stock application - I don't know for sure. As it is the y-pipe sits real close to the pan. Maybe the stock piping isn't as close... I can't remember.
TBI305Camaro - Thanks for the compliments
It seems back a year ago when it was painted I caught a lot of flack for the two-tone
Everyone in person loves it though, even those who don't like two tone.
