Torque Converter Spec questions

Im having my tranny rebuilt right now, and the builder is recommending that I have a new converter put in becuase there is too much Endplay he measured it to be .003 and told me that factory spec is .000-.0025 Can anybody back this up? Is .003 too much? Thanks in Advance,
Chris

I guess it was the clearance between the stator and the turbine? he used some thing to measure it he screwed it in to the torque convter and used a gauge to measure the movement.
