T56 to 700r4?
Anyone gone from stick to a auto? I might seem crazy. LOL I had a T5, went to a T56, and now I'm thinking about a stalled auto. I did a search but could only find auto to stick swaps... NO stick to auto swaps. What will I need besides the tranny, stall converter, TV cable, crossmember, and tranny cooler? How will I control the lock-up converter? I'm tired of going thru clutches... they're aren't cheap for T56s!! THANKS, Later

my car has an auto, so we could just trade cars
, but seriously you can buy a lockup switch for the converter and i think you named everything you need, should be easier than an auto to manual swap

i did a manual to auto swap in my camaro.
You need to get some steel and start banging and cutting on it to fill in that shifter hole.....3 days later you can begin with the rest.
I am going to use a B&M lock-up controller box. It was around $125 I believe a year ago. You can pick what speed you want the converter to lock up. It's a pretty nice piece. Other than that it wasn't too bad. I did have to do some sealing around that shifter hole....fun fun fun. If you have any other questions let me know.

Thanks guys! Now I guess I just need to decide if I want to give up shifting gears. I also need to find a decent 700r4. Any suggestion in the $1000-$1300 range??? TIA

Ah dude that is just as easy as going to a stick from an auto.
you need an auto radiator, I wouldnt just run an aftermarket cooler since the fluid will run way to cold then. And there are several aftermarket convertor controllers on the market, try summit or jegs.
(BTW, you have a PM on fast.)

I PMed you, my bad.
I probably won't be able to get the T-56 though, I don't have the know-how to go from an auto to a manual T-56.
But was kinda curious.

Wouldn't you have to do some cutting and such to get the clutch pedal to fit in, etc. ?

thirdgen resource has a tech article on how to swap a manual for an auto. Doesnt seem to be a bad swap, just time consuming.

Do yourself a favor and go with a 2800-3000 stalled 200r4. 700r4's are junk! Thats why I did the T-56 swap, the 700's dont hold up all that great when you are making decent power. I had a fully prepped 700 with hardened spragues, extra clutch packs, stage 2 ripper shift kit, 2,400 stall, corvette servo, etc...... and it still wasn't all that. Now 200r4's on the other hand came with grand nationals and they DO hold up to a decent amount of power. If you have to go auto, the 200 is the way I'd go. Also, if you do go with a 700, you can always use an automatic wiring harness, select auto trans in you PROM and then your ECM can control shift points etc... Why are you going through so many clutches? I'm making way over 400hp and I'm still on my first single disc McCleod clutch! What king of clutches are you using and are you resurfacing the flywheel at each disc change?

Well it seems that pro-built's 700's hold up well. I thought about a 200r4 too, but their OD is even higher than a 700r4's! I need MPG too! LOL I've pretty much decided to keep the T56 now. Iput a new clutch in this weekend that I had. I ran a used stock clutch b4 and it lasted quite awhile. Then I went with a replacement RAM clutch and it lasted ok but wasn't up to the task at the track. I never opted for an expensive racing one b/c it seems like everyone has problems with them. I ended up using a clutch I got with this T56. It was made by some place in Texas and has kevlar buttons on the flywheel side and is a stock style on the pressure plate side. As for the flywheel, it didnt need turned this time. It was a little glazed over, but it was flat and true so I cleaned it up with some 36 grit sandpaper on a DA sander. Worked fine. This clutch seems to be better and I can notice it wants to grab more when taking off, kinda shutters if you don't give it enough gas. I don't think it will like to be slipped or ridden at all. LOL
*thanks guys for all the info, I think I'll stick with my T56 and save up for the 12bolt and awesome clutch. I just like the MPG and banging gears too much to put an auto in it. Maybe later on when I hit 11s or something
