leak from the shift selector shaft 700r4

Has anyone else had a leak from the shift selector shaft of the 700r4? This will be the second time it has leaked. If I remember correctly there was some surface rust on the shaft before. Do I need to get a new shaft or is there a way to clean it up?

thanks,
phil

If I were changing the filter and fluid, I'd replace the shaft while the pan is off. You could polish the shaft while it is in the tranny, but the linkage and shaft seal need to be removed to do it right. If you don't have a seal puller specifically meant to do the job, you could damage the case or shaft when removing the seal. You should be able to get a good used shaft and a seal at any tranny shop.

You can buy a new shaft from the dealer for fairly cheap, I have had to replace one before, but on ones that I get that have light surface rust, I clean it up with a brown scotchbrite pad. There is a tool to remove/install the seal with the shaft installed, but I perfer just to pull the pan and do a tranny service while I'm at it.

There are lots of "Scotchbrite Pads". Do you mean something like steelwool?

I think the brown Scotchbrite is a commercial grade as used by body shops, etc. The green ones you will find in grocery stores,
Wal-Mart, etc. will do the job, too. Steel wool would be OK if
you remove the shaft from the tranny to clean it.
