Any difference between a 87 700r4 and a 89 700r4?

The 87 in question is out of a 87 Camaro berlinetta, its replacing the 700r4 in mine. Sadly it seems my 700r4 decided to die a little quicker.

Here's the symptoms

Wont' shift out of 1st till 3,000rpm under any amount of throttle. When it tries the 1-2 shift it just hangs in limbo and i have to let off the gas for it to shift. Once it does shift it kinda just clunks into gear.

No other gears are affected, and despite my stretched TV cable I still think the tranny ate a big fish.

well it will go in I know that because almost all the 700Rs are the same in the F bodies despite some small changes over the years. you can always swap over the parts that are different to make it work as well

As long as your replacing a V8 F-body transmission with another V8 F-body transmission, its a direct swap. Depending on axle ratio, the speedo gears might be different, but other than that, the two trannys are completly interchangable with the '89 being slightly more desireable.

There are differences over the years in spline count on the shafts, some clutch pack changes, stuff like that. I don't know too much about the details, but they got better in the later years.

First thing to find out would be whether it's really a 89 trans, or just a trans that was in a 89 car. If it's been replaced during the car's life, who knows what's in it now.

Hmm...I should have made myself clear. The 89 trans is the current one in my car. Which is BLOWN. I'm replacing it with a low mile 700r4 trans out of a 87 berlinetta(305 TBI).

My current tranny has the VSS all the way through, its not cable driven at all. What would it take to convert the cable driven 87 over to VSS? Could i use the parts out of the old trans, or would I have to get a converter box?

I would replace the TV cable first off..BEFORE anything else..that thing is sensitive..and misadjustment could cause what you are describing..

If it wasn't set correctly, or broke then wouldn't it affect all gears? 1-2 is shot, 2-3 is great, 3-4 is moderate. The only shift affected was the 1-2 shift. Sure, I've got a replacement, but the tranny was going anyways. I suppose I can try to fix the TV cable, but the tranny was on its way out for a long time.

Besides, no one has answered my question. Is there a way to get the electronic speedo in my car to work with the cable driven 87 tranny?

Yes you swap out the electric stuff for the mechanical..easy as pie.....pull it out...put it in..goes in the tailshaft housing...and no it wouldnt necessarily effect all....I'm telling you , a improperly adjusted cable can do some weird stuff....I'm not saying your tranny isnt shot....but hey, its worth a try......

just swap out the tailshaft housing between the 2.. The tranny is the same just different guts in the speedo gear.

By the way, the tranny is slipping, just not very much yet. I have a feeling that a few more WOT runs right before I drop the new tranny in will kill it. ^_^ NOT, I still may need to drive it, so its a driveway queen till I'm ready for the swap.

Actually, I'm trying to arrange a tow, as I'd have to drive it nearly 20 miles to get it to my uncles garage. He's got a lift, air tools, and all the cool stuff to make this job ten times easier.

Well, its official. My Tranny bit the big one, 4th gear is gone. I went to pass someone today while taking it to the tranny shop and the RPM's shot straight to 3,500. At 3,500rpms in 4th gear my car should be pulling almost 118mph, and I know thats not right. I felt absolutley no acceloration while giving it moderate gas. The good news is its already in the shop and the tranny is gonna be swapped by wednesday at the latest. They said it even might be possible to get it in tonight. If they did I'd have it by tomorow.
