How can i tell my gears

I got a spare rear end right now and was told it had 3:73s how can i be certain what gears are in it.

Transmission: 700r4 (for now)

pull the cover..count the teeth on the ring gear...and pinion and devide the 2........

or look for the ratio stamped on the edge of the ring gear and do the math
