TH400 questions

I might end up building a 454 for my Z28. I know the 700-R4 will be disappearing soon , and I want to know how much power a stock TH400 will handle. Is it a direct bolt-in replacement for 700-R4? Is a new driveshaft going to be necessary?

It is not a direct bolt-in. The crossmember will have to be moved; it will need a vacuum line to its modulator since it uses the sensilbe system of engine vacuum to determine the shift point instead of the stupidity of a cable; and it uses an electric kickdown switch (usually mounts on the gas pedal bracket).

The driveshaft will certainly need work. Apart from the length, it uses a totally different spline at the rear of the trans.

Here's a pic of the yoke splines for a Camaro, and one for a Turbo 400.
