Questions about swap to a manual transmission
Questions about swap to a manual transmission
I have an 89 Pontiac Firebird, 305 TPI, Automatic Transmission, My brother has a 91 Commaro 305 with a manual transmission. My brother toatled his car about a week ago, because the frame is bent. The engine, and drivetrain is 100% intact. I was wondering if it is possible to swap my firebird to the manaul transmission using these parts, how much $ and labor would be required if it is even possible. I have a friend who is a mechanic, so labor would be cheap. Any help is appreacieated. Thanks

It's really not all that difficult, with a donor car like that. The trans itself, the bell housing and clutch parts, the pedal assembly (the whole thing), tha hydraulics, and the chip are all that's required; you may need a speedo gear change, but maybe not if both cars have the same gears in the rear end.
It's probably a 5-6 hr job, I would expect it to cost somewhere around $300-350 labor.

You are in a very position to do this swap since you have the doner car right there.
It can be time intensive and it's ideally not something you want to pay someone else to do.
However, if you can get it done cheap and the guy isn't a hacker then I'd go for it.
Rounding up all the parts is a real pain so now's the time while you've got them all there.
Welcome to the boards - also, there's tons of posts about how to actually do this swap and what to watch out for.

I did this swap about 2 months ago. It was not as easy as you would think. It took me a solid 26 hours over the course of a weekend. That includes food breaks and general f*cking around time as well. The pedal assembly is kind of a pain because you have to lay on your back and work under the dash, which sucks. Cutting the hole in the floor is also a pain because there is bracketry that once held the automatic to the floor that makes cutting a pretty litttle hole difficult. It is very doable to swap in a manual, dont get me wrong, but it is not as easy as everyone thinks.
