700r4 question

Could really use your help on this one... The 700r4 in my car(specs below) has a clicking noise that changes with the rpms. When I shift from park to reverse or park to drive it goes away, but comes back once the gear is engaged. The tranny seems to shift alright when it is cool, but slips on the 2-3 gear shift. Overdrive doesn't work at all anymore. I usually get about 30 miles before it starts to get worse. It gets to the point where it won't shift out of first and is constantly slipping. I had the tranny completely flushed out and the fluid appeared to be almost black. Now, about 500 miles later, the fluid is just as bad again. When they did the flush they didn't drop the pan.

Mine started doing the same thing a few weeks ago. The bad news is that it is now sitting in the garage. I pulled it out today. I have a Pro-Built 700R4 on the way. This may not be what you wanted to hear but I think it is time for a new tranny or time to rebuild that one. Considering what year you have, if that is the original transmission you should consider yourself lucky it made it this long (I was with mine).

are you sure the overdrive doesn't work. count the gears on mine when you put the stick into OD it was like a second neutral but the car itself shifted up to oD when it was in drive? Sounds confusing just have it rebuilt

The fact that the longer you drive it, the worse it gets, and the fact that it was flushed, but the pan was never removed, tells me that the filter is probably clogged. Unlike a fuel filter, that is expected to be clogged with infrequent service, a tranny filter should NEVER clog. If it does, the only thing it can be clogged with is with busted tranny parts. If its slipping bad and the fluid keeps turning black, then I think its almost safe to say its shot. You may want to pull the pan and have a look inside and confirm it.

Once in a while it will shift into Od but when I let off the gas it seems to slip into neutral. After running it in overdrive for a bit it will completely slip out and just coast to about 10-15 mph and then barely goes into first but constanly slips out at about 3500rpm

BTW thanx for the replies, this is my first F-body and I hate not having it mobile...

That sir, does not sound good. I'd PM Pro-built-automatics, and ask him a few questions. I'd order a built 700r4, but I'm poor and cannot afford it. I mean REALLY can't afford it. I need a better job.
