replacing rear end, need help

Hey there guys, I posted a couple of days ago about what could be making the noise in the rear of my car. Well, I destroyed my posi unit. In order to get the car home I'm having the non-lockup unit reinstalled. When I get back though I want to replace the 10 bolt with something decent. (I like to hammer on it when **** comes my way) My question is, what rear end would everyone recommend for strength? I'm running about 350 hp and expect to be at about 425 at the end of the summer (maybe more). I've been thinking about a 12 bolt or a ford 9". Whats the deal with the Chevy 9" that I've been reading about on here? What do the 4th gen camaro's have?

What cars/trucks can I dig these things out of at the salvage yard? How much should I expect to pay for a rear axle assembly? My carrier is a 2 series, what problems will I have wanting to convert to a 3 series?

Its a lot of questions, but I appreciate any help I can get. I've done searches but haven't found anything about this.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

If you get everything out of a rear end, the conversion to a 3 series carrier is taken care of. Just find the gears with the ration you want and take the carrier and everything and swap them in. If you really want to beef up your rear end, there is a company(can't remember the name) that makes a Ford 9" that is a direct swap into the 3rd gen F-Bodies...I will try to find the link for you...they are kind of pricey though.

Oh...the early 80's S-10 Blazers came with 3.42 and 3.73 rear gears.

Here is a link to gearsrus and they custom build rear ends.

Thanks man, I appreciate that link and the info. What cars came with these rears? I can cut the tubes and weld on the lca brackets to make them fit? What's the rear in the s-10's, 12 bolt?

Any Ideas?

Thanks,
Mike

the s-10 Blazers from the early 80's(up to 86 or so) are the ones you will want to look at. They have the 10 bolt rear that is the same as the Camaro's. It is the easiest way to go, but you will still have the stock...low performance rear end. No need to swap out the whole rear end...just the carrier and gears.

yeah, its just that the way I see it is that the stock rear ends are weak anyways. Since I'm going to be dumping money into it, riding the car hard, and pushing out hopefully around 425 horses, I'd like to have a more stout rear end.

I guess what it I'm saying is that instead of dumping $400 into an eaton differential I could just chop up a 12 bolt and through that in there instead. I understand that it would be more, but I figure like a silverado or something has a 12 bolt in it or maybe some of the mustangs or f250's run a 9 inch?

I was going to just replace the differential with another borg warner unit out of the junkyard but it doesn't seem worth it if I have to do it every 2 years.

Thanks again man, I really appreciate the help,
Mike

Moser ! 9 inch will be a direct bolt in.

$920 for housing and your choice of axels 28,31, or 35. The entire package with gears, housing, carrier, axels, is gonna cost ya around $2,000.00 + which for a top of the line rear end really isn't too bad.

I'll be going this route in a few months.

Check out there www site at www.moserengineering.com

12-bolt or Ford 9" rears have the strength you want and they will bolt right in. That is if you have a extra $2300 laying around, also
don't forget the extras such as brakes and your time paintings your new prize.

Yup I went that route and talked to moserengineering. Got the 9" rear with 4.11s and then got the wilwood prostreet race brakes because my borg warner brakes would have been to much of a pain to install. Total cost was about 3,000. The rear alone is 2300 if I remmeber right. I did the swap in a fairly small garage. It was pretty easy- just have to remmeber that you need a new U-joint for the driveshaft.
