Tranny Question

My tranny was working fine, except for shifting high in the RPMs, and then hard..... I figured it was about to go anyways, and then it happened. I was getting on it in OD, when it appears that OD burned up? I have all the other gears and it still drives the same in 1st. 2nd, D, and R.... Would it be that if I burned up the OD clutch that I wouldn't have drive.... and funny thing is that if I shift into OD when I am at 60 or so it will still be able to drive, as long as I don't go WOT. Could it be the torque convert? Any help would be great...

Please and Thanks
Adam

The forward sprag is slipping under higher loads. Sort of common problem. It works in D because the overrun clutch is applied and keeps the sprag locked anyway. After having the exact same problem once after a rebuild I did and having to pull the trans to replace the sprag, I learned to replace it first off. The part is like $20 or so, but the trans has to come apart to do it!

How easy or hard you would say to replace... Did you do the work or had it done. Looking at diagrams of the internals of the 700r4 it seems pretty easy, would need a press though right?

No press required. If you've rebuilt transmissions before, it will be really easy, if not, it's still not all that bad, it just take some time to pull it out, pull the valve body and pump. The forward sprag is located in the input assembly which is attached to the input shaft.

I did the work because it was one that I had just finished rebuilding.

Since you seem to be having tranny problems anyway, I would go ahead and rebuild it and install a Transgo kit. It' not much more work to finish the rebuild from there!

What or where would be a good place to get not a stock rebuild kit, but not a full race rebuild kit, just something for harder street driving? Or what would anyone recommend for a rebuild kit? and I have heard good things about transgo shift kits.

Check this out. This is the most complete solution I've seen anyone offer. The kit's have everything you need for whatever you intend your application to handle. Dana is also very good with tech support on the phone!

I rebuild stock transmissions at the where I work and can get the parts pretty cheap, but for the caliber of kit that probuilt puts together, they can't be beat! When I do my transmission, I'll be getting my kit from probuilt!

Now, there are also many other excellent kits available out there, I just haven't dealt with them. For stock rebuilds, I use kit's from Dacco. They use Precision International paper and rubber kit's with Raybestos clutches and Alto Steels.

Look through some of the old messages on here, or do a search, and you'll find many other good sources.
