Hard Shifting

Hi...My son's 91 RS has a heck of a time shifting from neutral to 1st..how can i tell if the clutch pushroid is travelling far enuf?? sometimes the problem isn't there at all. I can usually remedy by shifting into 1st just b4 stopping, but I don't wanna spend that much time on the TO bearing..Present clutch installed by GM Dealer 47,000 miles ago..hate to keep pounding into gear, fraid it'l break tranny...fluid in reservoir looks good..haven't bled it though....this came on all of a sudden... when i try reverse to see if clutch has disengaged, it hasn't, lotsa grinding....also,clutch engages immediately when liftiing off. I can see the fork and pushrod, by the way...no cover..Ant ideas???Thanx Dana

What happens if you shift it into some other gear. like 3rd, before you try to go to 1st? That's what I've always done with manual transmissions.... makes any of them easier to deal with.

They should eventually spin down and coast to a stop; not instantly though. It takes a few seconds.

If it shifts into reverse correctly by doing as described above, then the clutch is working OK; and there's not alot you can do, that's just the way that particular trans happend to be.

ya, but the trouble is, it doesn't stop spinning..i've had to shut the motor off to shift it into rev...in my driveway, i've tried to shift into 1st from neutral, and had the car creep forward, as if the synchro's are moving the car forward, and i think they are...i read that the fork travel should be 1/2"..i had my wife push the pedal, and it seems i'm getting that...pumping the clutch seeems to make no diff....thanx for the comebax, by the way....Dana

That's likely to be the pilot bushing or bearing then. It probably either wasn't replaced last time it got a new clutch, or has gone bad since.

How does the clutch pedal feel?

Does the problem go away after the car cools down?
