VSS sensor in a manual???

I am wondering where the VSS sensor is in an 1987 305 tpi 5 speed manual tranny?

My speedo stoped working about 2-3 days ago and every time I drive for about 5-10 minutes it throws a code 24.

I want to know if it harms the car when I drive it this way?

and is it a pain to replace the VSS?

thanks everyone.

The VSS is in the speedometer.

Fix your speedo / speedo cable / speedo gears problem and the code will stop occuring.

Exactly,
I have had that problem a couple times with my cars and that fixes it.
Good Luck!

when I try tot ake off my gauge cluster to get to the VSS sensor, it doesn't come off all the way, I know the speedo cable is holding onto the speedo gauge, but I cannot pull the gauge cluster out far enough to disconnect the speedo gauge, is there another way to aproach this? and do I need another speedo or can I just buyt he part and swap them out?

I'm just glad it isn't int he tranny like auto's

undo the cable at the other end ( cruise control or tranny ) this will free up some slack so you can pull the cluster out enough to get to the back of the speedo. I went through this several times trying to get my speedo working.

manual and auto camaros got in-trans VSS the same year; 1990 I believe.

manual and auto firebirds got in-trans VSS the same year; 1986 I believe.

It's easier and quicker to change a VSS in a 700-R4 or T5, than to pull a speedo.

If it's the cable holding the speedo, press towards yourself on the retaining clip; usually the top or bottom of the clip is what needs pushed on.
