what size socket does it take for the pinion nut?

i think it is different on the 9-bolts. Anybody know what size the 9-bolt pinion nut is specifically?

Same, although a 28mm is a little bit tighter fit on the nut. Mine is apart now, because the damn nut backed off.

Actually, i just did the work on the rear today, and the nut on both the 9-bolts I have took a 1 1/16" socket. Yeah for the 1/2 inch impact gun, it ripped the nut right out. I plan to use a solid spacer, then either use loctite or tackweld the nut to the pinion. Good luck man.
