2.73's to 3.42's?? Help PLS
I have a '90 RS auto with the standard open 10 bolt and 2.73's. I want to improve the low-end and traction, and I want to install a Posi with 3.42's or at least 3.23's. I know those gears won't fit my series 2 carrier, and I need to change that as well.
My problem, is that 3rd. Gens were not imported to my country in Central America (only 10 and I have 1 of those, there's others that were brought in by enthusiasts, but I'd say no more than 80 3rd. gens here, sad isn't it?), unlike 4th. Gens.which were sold by dealers and there's lotsa them. Importing heavy stuff like a differential and carrier, would be very expensive (plus high taxes, etc) so I'm trying to source it locally if I can.
From what other GM or Chevy vehicles could I get the posi and gears?? Pickups? Blazers? Suburbans? 4th. Gen Camaro??
I haven't opened my diff yet,. How can I tell if a carrier is a 3 series or 2 series for when I see one? Any marks or code numbers on it? Anyone has pics?
Would it be easier to swap a complete 4th gen rear axle? I don't know if the suspension pickups points are the same, and the mounting points for the LCA. The disk brakes out in the back would be nice too, but then I would have to change the wheels and the proportioning valve at the master cylinder...and would mean more $$
What else would I have to contemplate besides a new cover seal and lube?
Thanks for the help you guys, you're really lucky you can get everything very easily there...

4th gen would be the best ones to get. They are a direct bolt-in to your car.
The only other vehicles that have ones that will fit are the S- series trucks; but they have a grossly inferior posi. Avoid them. Gears are the same though, if you find a set od S-truck gears, just keep looking for a 4th gen posi unit.

Why not buy 3.42 Richmond Gears for a 2 Series carrier. I have a 2 series Auburn Pro and 3.73 Richmond Gears! Richmond makes ratios up to 4.11 for the 2 series carrier. The 2 series carrier actually allows more gear flexibility! As far as a posi, you can install a PowerTrax in your open differential.
