Some rearend question
i was just wondering which gears came on a stock 84 camaro z28. Also what would i gain from getting, say, 3.73 gears. what do the numbers mean like 3.73 or 4.10, and which is the best. do they increase top speed or they good for dragging? thanks alot

the higher the number say 4.11 you will see an increase in you 0-60 acceleration, or possible wheel spin. These will also lower the limit on your top end speed. Also, use more gas.
Stock an 84 might have come with 3.23 ish, the reason I say ish is because I am not sure if it would be a 10 bolt or a 9 bolt. It is also possible that you have some other ratio. Check your rpo # to make sure.

IMAGINE, a lever, make it a teter-totter and on one end you have a fixed length of 1 Foot. The other end is variable, in this case a 3.73. That 3.73 Feet in this case would can lift more weight easier than say 2.73 Feet.
In effect what is happening is the higher gear ratio lets the engine spin up faster with less restance just like a longer arm on a lever.
The down side as we all know is if the gear ratio is too high like a 5.00:1 then your engine speed will be about 4000 RPM at 70 MPH. Its GREAT for doing burn outs, but your engine would not like to run at that speed for a long time, and your 1/4 mile times would drop because you would run out of engine before the 1/4 mile was up.
does that help?
