trans pull

Ok, instead of wasting everybody's time with the same old question, I'd just like to know whats the best book or books to buy for pulling a transmission. The car is being towed shortly and I really have no idea what I'm doing, something with detail and pictures would be great. Maybe we could do a sticky like we have for the ls1 swap? ( :hail: ) Just a thought, thanks.

It's too simple for a book. Unlike the LS1 swap, where lots of stuff has to be changed and it's not comon knowledge, dropping a transmission is nearly as basic as replacing a water pump.

Take out the drive shaft; take off the converter dust cver, and take out the 3 bolts that hold the torque converter to the flex plate; undo the shifter cable; support the transmission with a large pice of wood or something under the pan, or a trans jack or something; remove the crossmember; remove the 6 bolts that hold it to the engine; lower & remove.

I guess you could make a book out of that...

Having just removed my 700R4 this weekend I learned a few things that my Haynes and Chilton's manuals didn't say how. One of their first steps is to" remove the dip stick tube by removing the upper bolt retaining the dipstick tube and separate the tube from the transmission." What they didn't tell you is that that bolt is the top trans to engine mounting bolt which you can't even see till you lower the trans on a jack a few inches, near the end of the job. I needed about three feet of extensions and one u-joint near the scocket end to remove. I also recommend getting the bottom of the car at least two feet off the ground. I used a cheap trans jack from Harbor Freight Tools. Draining the fluid first will prevent oil spill messes later. Most is just unbolting the drive shaft, torque arm, rear crossmember, torque converter, pulling wire connections. I had to lowered the trans from the engine several inches till I could get my flair wrench on the cooler lines and the TV cable. The TCI street fighter trans and converter go in next weekend.

It's about a hundred times easier to get the top bolts from above, even with the distributor still in there.... just reach down behind there with a short 9/16" box-end wrench.

Thanks RB for the short wrench idea. Wish I knew that yesterday! I couldn't see or fill the bolts because the wire harness go's over the top of the trans. Any tips for installing a new trans.?

Not really....

"Installation is the reverse of removal".

About the only thing I can think of is, if you don't have a trans jack, eat a good breakfast before you stab it in.
