a rearend question...
does anyone have or had at one time, a strange engineering 12 bolt?? if so what are your experiences with it, good or bad?? also, has anyone beefed up the stock rearend? if so, how, and what were the best years to beef up, or are they all the same. thanks.

what exactly would welding the tubes together do, i have no idea about rearends... also, is that something for a street driven car? or just something for someone who wants to race.
i am gonna have to strengthen my rearend when i do my engine swap so i wanted to know if the stock rearend could be safely made capable, or if its best to get a new one? thanks

Welding the tubes refers to the axle tubes where they attach to the center sction of the housing. The factory uses 2 spot welds. To strengthen it, you weld all the way around the tube where it plugs into the center. It has nothing to do with the posi feature if it exists, and has no impact on using it as a saily driver. My DD has its tubes welded.
That, a stud girdle cover, a solid pinion bearing spacer, a good posi, some better axles (Superior or other stock-configuration ones are better in this application than "custom" ones such as Moser), and a good posi carrier, are about all you can do to beef it up. Synthetic fluid of course.

Well considering that except for the axle splines the 82 rear is already the same as a stock LS1 rear, it should do fine as long as the driver doesn't beat on it too much.
