How much HP are you talking about? The tranny doesn't care what engine it's hooked to, just how much power it has. The 700r4 can be built to handle quite a bit of power.

well if i get the 454 i'm going to go all out... bore it .030 over (motor has high mileage) JE pistons, aftermarket world or thickFlow heads, the biggers cam that will fit and maybe one day a blower. but that may be years down the road i'm waitting to way someplace around 600hp maybe??

I could build one that takes about 625 horsepower maximum (with a 10" or smaller diameter torque converter), anything after that I would go to a built TH400.

Stock, depends on the year of the tranny and how much it has already been abused. At that HP level you probably aren't going to need overdrive anyway.

Why would you invest a huge chunk of cash in an engine and leave the transmission stock? Even considering it sounds plain stupid to me. People have trahed 700R4's with stock 2.8's.
This isnt going to be a very streetable setup if it does happen so choose the correct transmission for the job. My BB 402 is pushing over 500hp and the transmission I have isnt going to hold up much longer to abuse and its a HD Muncie 3.

Friend of mine has a 500 HP BBC with a 700-R4 behind it in a 68 Firebird... the transmission was built up a bit so it's holding together so far. Really haven't made any passes on it since there's zero traction lol Getting slicks sometime soon so we'll see after that.
