Speedo problem with 92 trans in 88
Alright guys i'm in the middle of a tranny swap this weekend and i came across one problem. I bought the trans that was built to 92 specs for my 88. I know in 92 they had the eletric speedo but i have the cable driven speedo. No problem i thought, i'd just switch over that little mechanism that the speedo went into from my old trans in place of the electronic one on the new trans.
So the old mechanism consists of that black piece that is visible from the outside which goes to the inside and has a large conical gear thing on it. That gear lined up with another cylindrical plastic gear thing inside the tailshaft. Now on the new trans this little cylindrical plastic gear thing that was inside the tailshaft was not there so i couldn't swap the mechanism over. I knwo this is all hard to understand but now is there any way i can somehow get my mechanical speedo to work without that plastic gear that was in the tailshaft? Or will I actually haev to relpace the tailshaft itself.
if this is all too confusing let me know i can take pictures, both trans are still out of the car so i can try to do that.

Sounds like whenever the trans was built, whoever built it didn't bother to put the drive gear back in. You'll have to have that in order for it to work, and it will have to be the right one in order for the speedo calibration to be correct, which will in turn depend on your rear end ratio.
There are no "92 specs" for a T-5. Either it's the 1st design, with the straight roller bearings on teh countergear, or it's the 2nd design, also know as "WC" (ppppuuuuukkkkkeeeeeee...... sorry, I detest that 5-minute management guru buzzword) with the tapered rollers in those places. None of that has anything to do with the speedo gears.
There is no difference in that drive gear between the electric speedo and the cable speedo. I've posted this so many times I'm almost getting tired of typing it. The trans is the same, the drive gear is the same, everything is the same. Obviously you might need a different gear than the one that happens to be (or not be, as the case may be) in a swap trans; that would depend on the rear end gears that the donor and acceptor cars are equipped with. Other than that, they are the same.
Right now I am driving around a 83 model car, with a 84 hydraulic bell housing, a 91 T-5, and a 87 instrument cluster. It also used to even have a 73 400 engine, but now has the 83 305 back in it. That's how interchangeable all this stuff is.

Maybe, I can't say for sure. But to put in the drive gear the extension housing has to come off. Not real practical to do in one of these cars with the trans installed. Bummer.

both trans are out, so i guess i'll just swap the gears today. would i need to purchase a new seal for the tailshaft for the newer trans?
