rear end app. mod,chrysler 8 3/4

hows this for a rear end apperance mod, it a little more complicated that a chrome rear end cover. Its a chrysler 8 3/4 rear end, why you ask ? cause its way stronger than stock and way cheaper that a ford 9 inch or built 12 bolt. My grandfather and i are doing the project ourselves.this is the 3rd f body he has done this too, 77 t/a , 82 camaro , and my 85 t/a. these are only progress pics as you can see.we had to cut all the perches off the chrysler rear and then cut off all the spring perches off a spare 3rg gen rear. The brackets had to welded to the chrysler rear and all the measurements were taken before all the cutting to get everything perfect. We allready drilled the axles and the drums to fit the chevy bolt pattern.we still have to do the torque arm mount and then its allmost ready .any questions or comments are greatly appreciated.

Big Plus

3rd member gear swap is less than 45 mins once youve done it a couple of times. That would be the ideal set up, plus I loves Mopars

yes the rear end is the same width as the 3rd gen. actually its like and 1/8 th inch wider over the whole thing, so a 1/16 isnt gonna be noticable. the rear end is from get this a 1969 dodge van 1/2 ton. A chrysler e-body from 70-74 is also the same width . i have pics of the torque arm mount from the 82 camaro, the guys who has it is friends with my parents and me and he is narrowing his rear end so the 3rd member is out . i have no clue how to set the pinion angle , my grandfather is the one who is measureing the stuff. today actually aug 4th we took some more measurements for the torque arm .thats whats great about the mopars, once you have a set up 3rd member changing it takes less than 2 hrs. let me switch to the other computer and put some pics of the torque arm mount up .

well the rear end is all done except for the brake lines. The drive shaft has to be shortened around 2 inches, we'll get the final measurements when the rear end goes in . My grandfather is gonna shorten the driveshaft , he shortened the one in my dads friends 82 camaro and it held up "he used to be a welding specialist." The torque arm also has to be shortened, so i guess i wont be able to buy a spohn one , o well it worked for the other guy and he drag raced. i guess the yoke makes a perfect fit onto the chrysler rear, i will also be running 4.10 or 4.11 's whatever chrysler had, on my stock engine 85 ta. Next year a crate engine goes in. 4.10 will be great for city racing.

4:10 seems a little to steep

how about a nice set of 3:55 or 3:91
nice job I really like the setup, to bad it wasnt available to buy the complete setup, 3rd member gear swap is very easy but messy

im gonna go with the 4.10 s until i can afford to change the whole center section, then get 3.73s. It is a nice setup , a stock chrysley 83/4 is actually stronger than a stock ford 9 inch . I read that in a hot rod mag. The ford is basically the same thing with a larger ring and pinion and 2 bearings on the pinion. But the real reason i went with this setup is cost . 170 bucks for everything. Rear end , por 15 , wheel cylinders, gaskets, seals. And all the other brake stuff was free. so cost is the major reason, plus its cool to have something different than others.

How much power can it take?
How extensive is the aftermarket?

in stock form it can take 500 -550 hp and with 35 spline axles it can take 650 -700. There are a few places that still sell parts, randys ring and pinion is one place . A complete center section costs about 1000 all set up .

Once you start to exceed 600 hp the gears are the weak point, not the axles, I have heard the tend to loose teeth. Mopar 8 3/4s are great all around rear ends but if you have a real terror on 4 wheels ( like my Challenger project car ) step up the to a Dana 60, with out a doubt the strongest and probably heaviest rear end ever installed in a passenger car, destroy one of those, and you got my respect.
