Do I have a 9 bolt?
What determines my rear? My RPO code says GU5 and G92 and G80, what do I have? So it says I have 3.23s, posi, and performance axle....but I'm pretty sure I have a 10 bolt....whats up with the G92 RPO if I have 3.23s, or did the G92 give the OPTION of a 9 bolt...
this website says the 9 bolt came only with 3.27, and that the g92 option was the 9 bolt, another site says the g92 was the 3.23 performance option, the RPO decoder says g80 is 3.23, why have 2 rpos for 1 axle ratio? im confused, im almost 100% sure i have a 10 bolt, and my rear isn't painted black, it's rusted over....

I'm just wondering about the RPO codes, Did G92 mean you MIGHT have the 9 bolt.....thirdgen.org says G92 means 9 bolt, and G80 means 3.23, but how can I have both, 3.23 wasn't an option with the 9 bolt....then another site says that the G92 was the 3.23 gear ratio....something is wrong...I'm almost 100% sure I have a 10 bolt....I did go under, but the rear of my car is so low and I didn't have a jack at the time, so I was counting one side of the cover, then moving over and counting the other side, I couldnt' see, so I was just feeling for bolts, I might have counted a bolt twice. If someone can clear the RPO code up for me it would make it alot easier.
My codes:
G92 : AXLE REAR RATIO, PERFORMANCE
G80 : AXLE POSITRACTION, LIMITED SLIP
GU5 : AXLE REAR, 3.23 RATIO
I have all 4 of the required options for the G92, so either the GU5 is incorrect, and should not be there (3.27 was BW, yet GU5 is 3.23) It would be nice if i had a 9 bolt, I need the extra strength
My codes:
G92 : AXLE REAR RATIO, PERFORMANCE
G80 : AXLE POSITRACTION, LIMITED SLIP
GU5 : AXLE REAR, 3.23 RATIO
G92 and L98(B2L) cars finally got the Borg-Warner HD 7.75 inch four pinion rear end, produced by GM Holden's Limited of Australia (Firebird WS6 cars went to this unit in 1986). These units can be identified by their 9 bolt (rather than 10) differential cover that has a rubber plug. The Borg-Warner logo is also cast into the bottom of the differential case. This rear axle came with tapered rather than straight roller bearings and a cone-clutch rather than disc-clutch limited slip unit. These units came painted black from the factory while most others were bare metal.
G92 for 1987 required the following options:
5.0 TPI (LB9)
Limited slip differential (G80)
Rear disc brakes (J65)
Engine oil cooler (KC4)
G92 for 1987 required the following options:
5.0 TPI (LB9)
Limited slip differential (G80)
Rear disc brakes (J65)
Engine oil cooler (KC4)

Screw the codes. Count the bolts. Park the car with the rear hangina over a curb so you can see it. If you want to know what the gears are, take off the cover and look. People change stuff about rear ends all the time; who knows whether whatever the "codes" say your car came with, is still there.
No you do not have a BW 9-bolt as your RPO code indicate it is a 10-bolt 3:23 with a Limited Slip & G92 is for the upgraded performance ratio (3:23). Now whats is so hard about that. Or you can get down and dirty and look at the rear for yourself.
Note! If your car is a later model then a 1989, 10-bolts were the only rear used on Factory 3rd Gen cars.

I want to know what codes are what though, is the G92 code really the 9 bolt code? If so I should have it, but if the GU5 code is 3.23 then something is wrong....does anyone have a 9 bolt and can help me out?
Stop and think for a minute. G92 only denotes a performance rear
which you have with the GU5 3:23 & G80 Limited Slip. It has nothing to do with a 9-Bolt. Since I take it your not the original owner, the first buyer opted for a upgraded rear. Again what year is your car????

does www.9bolt.com sell COMPLETE 9 bolt rears
However, I found an excellent site if FL that sells them (no connection to me), and no, they will not sell you the elusive 9 bolt ring and pinion... but they do have complete rears:
http://www.tacreationsusa.com/
I ordered my first item from them today so I can't really say too much about them, but they have been really helpful through the email.
(soon to have a 9 bolt in my 89RS)
