Something's not right

My 92 Firebird with a 305 TBI won't go into gear. It happened over the course of about two days. At first the shifter felt loose. Then, I had to try a few times to get it in drive. Now, it thinks it's in reverse whether it's in park or 1.

I don't know a whole lot about automatic transmissions, but it seems to me like the problem might be with the shifter rather than the transmission. When I used to be able to get it into drive it would run out fine.

I would appreciate any help. The motorcycle won't substitute very well in the rain.

just happened to me. go under you car and your shifter cable should be loose or completley off. there is a clip that holds it on and it probably came off.
