rear end rebuild

ok ive got a whine in the rear end bad at about 35mph on up. it goes away as soon as i put it in neutral, it isnt as bad under accel, its terrible at cruising though. im thinking the bearings in the rear end. how much of a pain is this to do? info you need should be in my sig, if you need anymore let me know. i dont knowwhat gears are in it, the guy i bought it from had "different" ones put in, but he didnt know what. i will know when i pull the cover though. thanks.

in neutral the rear end is still spinning, you might want to rethink what is wrong.

they arent going to make noise like that when they arent under a load though. as soon as a load is applied, the noise is there. even coasting is enough of a load from the trans to make it howl. but in neutral there really isnt any load on those bearings, at least not any from the trans.

Sounds like it could just be the gears. If the guy had richmonds put in the rear, especially used ones, they will normally making and whirring noise from the rear, I have used richmonds, and they do just what you are talking about, and it is really loud at higher speeds just keeping it at speed (staying at say 70mph), and for a used set of richmonds, this is perfectly normal, so I'd say find out what kind of gears they are and what exactly you are dealing with.
