Help with Gears!

Hello All,

I have an '86 Z28 with the 5-spd and 305. I recently bought a posi rearend with disc out of an '88 IROC. I'm going to do the swap soon but while the rear is out I was going to put some gears in it. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking the 3.73's. Also how do I find out what type of rear the '88 is so I can order the correct gears to fit? Thanks for your time and help!

my personal opinion is that 3.73 is too much gear for a TPI car, 3.42's seem to complement TPI nicely.

Sorry, should have clarified. I have a non-TPI 305. Make any difference?

It is proven that 5spd thirdgens run faster with 3.42 gears than 3.73's. Auto's are the exact opposite and run better with 3.73's. Now this all changes with cam and induction swaps and what have you's. A 3.42 gear in a t5 is a great all around street/strip gear.

Well I have an Edelbrock performer intake and cam. Soon to have the matching headers. So 3.42 is a good choice still?

Also does anyone know where I can find out what I have in my current rear. Like where I can find codes? Thanks!
