I am thinking of putting a six speed in my car with a new motor. I was just curious how much a stock one can take. I am going to probably be in the 450 - 500 hp range and need to make sure it will hold up.
Thanks

I have an article from Muscle Car mag. They talk about an aftermarket T56 that uses convential type clutch and holds a good amount of HP... It has built parts inside that beef it up over stock... I'll see if I can get around to posting it tonight... I think it retail'd like 2300 or 2400 for transmission + shifter.

You don't need a beefed up T-56. The T-56 is tough from the factory. GM's rating for the '94-'97 tranny's was 500hp and 450ftlb, but there are guys running 600hp through them at the drag strip and they're holding up fine.

Mated with a good clutch they can withstand a tremendous amount of abuse and wear and tear. It has been said numerous times that the T-56 is the best manual tranny ever.
