Help!!!

OK, I need some serious help here. I am having a problem with my car and I haven't a clue as to what the cause is, nor do I know how to fix it. I put my car up on ramps earlier this morning to check something out in my front suspension. (I had to jam my brakes yesterday to avoid hitting some idiot in a hopped-up Civic as he tried to gorilla the lane from me at 75 MPH, and subsequent to that, I noticed a shimmy/"strange feeling" in the right front.) When I put the car on ramps, I usually put the car into 1 so as to avoid jumping over the ramps, so when I put her in 1, I noticed that she sort of slammed into 1. I got the car onto the ramps and put her in Park, but I noticed that I couldn't get the key out of the ingniton. "Oh $**t" I thought, and then I brought it to my mechanic to see if he knew what it was. (Too bad today is his birthday and he is closed.) I noticed that when I backed my car out of my driveway, I can slide the gear shift lever into any gear without using the button on top, with the exception of 1. For 1, I must use the button. Also, I noticed that my car will not start in any gear other than Park. Is this an electrical problem or is this the tranny? Could this be the neutral safety switch? Please, I need help!!!

Everything will go back to normal when I have the switch replaced, ie, being able to use the stick normally by using the button to shift between gears?
