ford vs chevy t-5

my friend has an extra t-5 from a turbo coupe that he says i could have, i have rebuilt them before so that is not a problem, my question is that what would be involved in switching the input and ouput shaft to the correct ones to fit my 84z28, i realize that i would also have to change the tailhousing to one that has the tourque arm mount, but could the switch be done while i am rebuilding it? any one ever done this before? thanks for any advice or expierience you guys have.

You'd need an entire good Chevrolet V8 transmission. Most of the parts that normally go bad, are the vehicle-specific ones: the case, clutch gear, and mainshaft. Since the F*rd countergear and the GM clutch gear are different ratios, they cannot be mixed. So, the only things that interchange are the intermediate gears, some of the shifter parts, and reverse gear. Those don't ordinarily go bad without some one of the other mfr-specific parts also being ruined.

So, the easiest way to do the swap: take the F*rd one all apart, and lay all the pieces to the side. Put them in a box and put it on a shelf somewhere if they take up too much space on your workbench.

Then rebuild the Chevrolet one.

Farily simple when you think about it.

thanks for the help so your saying in the long run it would be easier and cheaper to just buy a t5 core and rebuild that rather than converting the turbo coupe t5 to fit my chevy, thanks
