sounds to me like someone put a 3.42 or 3.73 in it, or to that whereabouts, and didn't have the backlash adjusted just right, although that should wine louder as you go faster, but that's about the only thing I can think of...

Well, depends on how long the problem has been there? if it's been a long time, then the damage is probably already done, and the only worse it will get is shearing the gears, or the head off the pinion. if it just started, then the longer u drive with it like that the longer it will wear an uncorrect wear pattern into the gears, and make them weaker/more suceptible to damage. Different manufactures state different ammts of acceptible backlast, i've heard 2-6 thousands, and 4-10 thousands. But if it's been doing it for a while, and gets worse, plan on getting a new ring and pinion kinda soon, if it just started, see if someone can pull u'r cover and check the backlast on it with a dial caliper and see if it has caused damage and can still be adjusted.
