Driving home (So-Cal) from san fran last night, i was in fiifth, then out of nowhere the revs just soar and the car acts like its in neutral. So i guess now im missing fifth. All the other gears work fine, 1-4 and R. But when i put it in fifth it just acts like its in neutral. it is real soft going into fifth and i dont need to press the clucth in to move the stick into the 5th position. Any ideas on what it could be?

 

A friend of mine's RS did the same thing. Basiclly there is a clip that holds fifth gear in place, that wore out, or broke, allowing the gear to move out of alignment. He welded the gear to the shaft. But it broke a few more times, but worked for the most part.
