switch from 9 bolt to 10 bolt?

i have no idea why my car came equipped with a 9 bolt. i went down to a junk yard yesterday and there was not ONE 9 bolt on the 2 GTA's and 3 iroc's that i saw there. everything had 10 bolts. now im starting to consider switching my car over to a 10 bolt more seriously. both of my axel shafts are bent, and trying to find replacement parts are either really hard or really expensive. at this point im not really concerned with performance, i just want straight axels so i can finaly buy some new tires and not have to worry about one side wearing down due to the tires wobbleing around. do you guys think this is a good idea to switch from a 9 bolt to a 10 bolt? and lastly, before i do anything, are 10 bolt and 9 bolt axel shafts interchangable?

ok, i just called the junk yard and the guy is quoteing me $450(canadian) for the price of a used non-posi 10 bolt. for some reason this seems like a major rip off to me. im also haveing a hard time beliveing none of those 10 bolts had posi. what "should" i expect to pay for a used 10 bolt WITH posi? and if this guy isnt bull****ing, is it hard/possible to convert a non-posi 10 bolt to posi?

Man, I don't know the converison from Canadian to US but 450 sounds like a rip off for a non posi. If anything I would look into a moser rear, course if you're not planning on putting a lot of power to the ground I can understand swapping to another OEM one. The 10 bolts just are not that strong, especially when they could have been abused by former owners.

As for the 9 bolt. It only came in later f-bodies. It's a kind of hi-po upgrade over the 10 bolts. I've seen articles stating it's similiar if not better than the Dana 44.

A posi is simply worth more that's all it is. It can cost acouple hundred bucks for a new posi unit.

Might try getting ahold of miles at www.9bolt.com he might know where you can find some axles for your 9 bolt. He sales the ring and pinions and bunches over crap.

thanks for the info. i want to keep my 9 bolt, but im really not sure how much longer it has to live. 600 dollars (canadian) for 2 axel shafts from moser is a little steep, im not sure if im ready to blow that much money on my rear end just yet. the whole shell itself has rust flakeing off of it everywhere, and when i did a fluid change in the differential there was a lot of "silver fluid" comeing out. there wasnt any slivers of metal or chunks, but enough liquid metal to make me worry.

Here's a guy selling a 9 bolt 3.27 gear with working posi for 275 bucks... that just goes to show you how much the junk yard guy was trying to screw you over... a 9 bolt should hold up a lot more than a 10 bolt... my friend swapped out 3 10 bolts in his car (tweaked 305 carb with a t-350), I'm still running my stock 9 bolt (on my stock 350 TPI, with probuilt 700 and 2400 ACT stall). It has over 104k miles on it now.
