Tone coming from rear end

Hey guys,
I have had my car in the garage for the winter since the beginning of September. I start it up every 10-14 days or so and let it warm up, then I take it around the block. Today I started it up and I heard a tone coming from the rear end. Its hard to describe, but its a medium pitched constant tone that can be heard when I put my head next to the rear wheel (either one). There is no tone when I just turn the key to on, just the fuel pump priming. It doesn't change at all after the car warms up or after I take it for a little spin. Any idea what it can be? I don't know if this is related, but when I was driving it I could hear a noise (kinda like a slight clanking type noise) coming from back there when the transmission would downshift while slowing down. I hope my descriptions are adequate, its hard to describe sounds over the internet. Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance

Andy
