?'s about my ring gear and carrier

Before I head to the shop I was laying out my parts to make sure I've got everything covered...I thought I'd drop the ring gear into place on the $99 torsen to check the fitment, but it would not seat against the flange....Do you have to use the ring bolts to draw it against the flange or whack it with a plastic mallet? It come to within about 3/16" of seating. Is this normal? I'm sure all my parts are for the 10 bolt 7 5/8" rear...thanks for replies

Tighten the bolts down in a star pattern (like tightening lug nuts on a wheel) to draw the ring gear to the carrier flange.
