I am potentially picking up a 4th gen rear that will require a rebuild, but it is complete. the only damage is 2 teeth from the carrier are missing (haven't had it professional inspected yet don't know what else is toast)

I know it potentially will require a complete rebuild if not a partial.

I would like to know if my gearset and carrier will transfer over from my current rear (85 26 spline 3.73 non posi drum rear 100% stock)

I also want to know where the 26 spline vs 28 spline axels come into play?? I have no clue how a rear works, and I would like to know if it is the carrier that is the diff between axels as I looked on Richmond's sit and all the care about is 2 series or 3 series. From what I read I think I have a 3 series but, with the axel difference would I need to replace that???

there are no teeth on the carrier. the carrier from a thirdgen will swap over but the axle length is differant. 89 was the transition year from 26 and 28 spline axles, they fit in a splined hole in the carreir so the axles have to match the carrier. most likely the 4th gen rear has a couple of teeth off the ring gear if so you can swap your gear set over, as long as the same series carriers are used.
