just want to be sure about rear end

Hey all whats up? Well another question, I have a 91 RS, and its the stock rear end in her. I want to know if it will hold up to a 360 horse, 375 ft lbs torque engine. My tranny is built well, and im told by many a people that it doesn't lose that 25% everyone seems to agree with so im thinking 290-300 hp to the rear. I have heard that the rear can take up to about 310 horses.

Now, if it can't, what is a cheap alternative to fixing the problem and making sure that it won't bust out on me when I decide to give my baby a little hell?

Just so ya know, this isn't a strip car, its just my daily driver, with a lil bit o ***** behind it to have some fun every once in a while.

Thanks!!!

if you put an relatively sticky tires on it, you can kiss it good bye. im putting in a zexel torsen and 3.73s from slp. im also going to weld the axle tubes to the carrier and get a good cover. hopefully itll hold up to the 305 with drag radials

I've always been told that this isn't a good idea. So I won't do it, is there anything else that could strengthen the rear up? What about new gears? or would that just make it worse?

cheers!

I think there are quite a few guys putting alot more power than that to their stock 10 bolt. If you don't run ET-Streets or similar you shouldn't have much trouble.

would replacing the differential unit do that? I am looking at what you had talked about on the SLP site, the t/o zexel torsen differential.....says it'll fit right in and its only 99 bucks??

ok thanks!

the 99$ posi is a take-off 4th gen posi. They are sorta strong but the HD zexel torsion posi is much stronger. Its quiet a bit more $$ thought. However a new 99$ zexel torsion holds up to 4th gens fine.

I know a guy running a 02 trans am auto with his stock rear fine...only mods are a slp catback....oh and about 150hp shot of nitrous. He spins 1/2 way down the 1/8 mile track and still runs 7.7s. Its crazy.

Well, my 10 bolt with GM 3.73 gears lasted me eight years of street driving, Autocross and Hillclimbing. I don't Drag Race. Finally a Pinion tooth fatique cracked and sheared off.

Last time car was on a Chassis Dyno it put out 330 HP at the rear wheels and 360 Ft\lbs of torque. Since that test several changes have been made and we're probably close to 350 RWHP.

So...Yes they can last. YMMV.

It's been quite a while since the car was on the chassis dyno. Since then several improvements have been made to the engine. Goin' on the Dyno again this spring. Thanks for the thumbs up
