Is she broken?

Hey all, rebuilt tranny. Workes great with a single exception. I cannot manually shift it. If i put it in first, it stays in first even if i move the shifter to second. It will only shift if i bring it up to 3 or OD, in which case, i move to 2nd, and then 3rd and then 4th all normally....

I have 89 GTA auto w/350. Is it not supposed to be shifted into 2nd manually?

If it's a stock rebuild then it won't shift into whatever gear is selected. It will hold itself in a gear if it's selected (if it's in 2nd then it will shift from 1st to 2nd, but not to 3rd). If it had a manual valve body it would stay in whatever gear you selected (if you're stopped and you pop it in 2nd, you'll take off in second and it won't shift automatically).

Hope that explains it and didn't further confuse you.

Thanks, that does help. Altho there is still one question to be answered. You say if its in second, it will shift from first to second but no further? but if i start driving in first, then, say at 5000rpm shift to 2nd, the gearbox doesn't move. Mine anyway. Is that operation normal?

No.

Sounds like maybe you have a problem in the valve body.

Did you install a shift kit?

Nope, no shift kit. One thing tho, the shifter handle doesnt seem to like the first couple gears (hard to find 2nd and first) and hard to find where it stops, it doesnt seem to lock in the lowest parts...could it be the shift cable?

Check the adjustment of the TV cable.
