Park/lock control cable

I own a 91 Chevy Camaro Z28 with a 4L60 automatic trans.. I want to find out what the purpose is for the for the park/lock control cable. I was glancing at it on the Helm Camaro Service Manual. Your response is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It prevents the shifter from being taken out of park while the ignition is locked.

loose shifter lever

Ok, thank you for the info. Now, my problem is a loose shift lever. In Park, there is 1/4" of play no tightness. On the other gears I have to fish around to get them in the proper gear. In reverse for example, I shift it back with difficulty and once it is there the car is in reverse and I have to push the lever forward to get the reverse lights to come on. I have done some searching and it was the shift lever cable. Could a deteriorated shifter cable do this? I also have another question about the shifter cable replacing procedures. I am looking at a 1991 Helm Camaro Service Manual and it says I have to rotate shift lever clockwise to park detent and then back to neutral. Does it mean, in Park, rotate handle clockwise? Your response is greatly appreciated.

Ok I found the problem. It was two bolts holding the shifter cable. One of them was loose and the other fell off. I had the trans fluid and filter change almost two years ago. I guess the tech didn't tighten it enough. Is it true that a person has to retighten the trans pan bolts after 100 miles after the change? Another question I have is how much play(movement) should the shifter have in each gear? If there should be no movement, how do I tighten it up?

Re: Park/lock control cable

yea im having a similar problem, right now i bought a new ignition switch for my 87 trans am and i removed the old one, and removed the park/lock control cable, but the new one that i bought comes with a new one on the switch, so how do i remove the old one from the cable so i can put it on the new switch, thanks, or should i just mount the old cable holder on the new switch?
