Need help!! I cany separte the tranny from the engine.

I pulled the motor & tranny as a unit for my 395cu in. project. I have the tranny & engine sitting on the floor and I have removed the 6 tranny/engine bolts.

I can not get the two units to separate. What am I missing???

I have an Art Carr torque converter. Is that what is hanging up,, the splines or what!!!!!!!!

Have you removed the inspection cover?

IIRC there are only 6 bolts, so it should be free, you'll just have to pry it out. I generally use a large screwdriver or crowbar and it'll come right out.

No, I have not remove the inspection cover. It appears to be attached only to the tranny.

You have to remove the inspection cover. It will not clear the flexplate otherwise. I would also unbolt the converter from the flexplate, otherwise, you'll have a bunch of transmission fluid running all over the place. The flexplate stays attached to the engine (End of the crankshaft), and that's why the cover won't clear.

Not sure on an automatic vehicle but the inspection cover on the manual tranny's catch on to the flywheel and is taken off in order to remove the bellhousing, take that off and see how that goes. If not, get a large screwdriver like the above poster said.

Thanks for the help.

I will remove the inspection cover (700R4 tranny) and remove the TC bolts between the TC and flywheel.

Then I will see if the two units will separate. I remember when I installed the TC, I had to beat the TC into its location which was pttuing it unto the front end of the tranny. It was very tight.
