9 bolt upgrade
I just brought home a new (to me) 9 bolt posi rear end with 3.73 gears in it. (Borg Warner P/N 10032270 originally 3.27 gears) This is the unit gtaguy87 was offering in the classified section of this site. This will be going into my 1985 Sport Coupe Firebird which is equipped with 3.08 non-posi 9 bolt axle.
The steel drive shaft is still attached - I may use it...
Axle also includes 10.5 inch disk brakes which will be replacing my drum brakes. Issues I foresee here are a need for a different parking brake cable and replace existing combination valve with manual proportioning valve - Wilwood or Summit.
I also see that I will need to do something about the speedometer. I'd like to do more than just replace the gear. The cable sqeaks when it's cold and I keep pinging the needle on the 85 mph dial! Maybe an electronic speedometer from Autometer is the way to go. But working behind the dash is such a pain!
I'll keep my existing Lakewood control arms but not sure if I'll replace my current stock panhard rod. I probably won't install lower springs at this time.
I assume I'll need to replace my little 14 rims with 16 inch to fit the calipers in the rear. I'm having a hard time deciding what style rims to get. The tire choice seems be BF Goodrich g-Force. Whether I need to or not I still want to upgrade to 16 inch.
