I'll throw a data point up for you...mine liked 3.42 gears.
I was running a Vigilante torque converter stalling at 2600-2800rpm, an Accel intake base, and ported stock runners. Cam was a GM HOT.
13.2sec @ 102mph in the 1/4mile, 287hp/363tq on the dyno.

as a rule for most street type preformance applications 3:42 is pretty much what everyone goes with. you should provide a bit more info though so you'll get a better or more thought out answer.

3.42 or 3.73.
