Workability of aftermarket auto shifters
Ok, so I'm getting into searching for drivetrain parts and I was looking at auto shifters. Anyone care to enlighten me as to how these work? Does it turn your car somewhat into a manumatic? I am going to get a shift improver kit at the same time and I don't want to do anything wrong, I heard that manually shifting an auto was bad for the tranny. So if anone could explain how these work to me I would be much obliged. Thanks a lot!

I have to bring this back from the dead because I really need to know, I'm looking at the Hurst Dual-Gate shifter or the B&M Hammer shifter with a shift kit, need to know ASAP!

The shifter can't change the way the transmission shifts. That is, if you take a stock shifter and put it in OD and drive the car, and you take an aftermarket one and put it in OD, you won't be able to tell the difference. Or, if you shift the one manually from 1st to 2nd and so on, the trans will shift identically to how it will shift with the other.
Mostly they improve the driver feel for what gear the trans is in, and/or prevents the shifter from moving more than one gear at a time. That allows you to just slap it up one gear and not have to worry about it going into neutral or whatever. It allows for much greater consistency at the track.
