I've got a problem with the 700r4 in my 84 chevy van. I know it is in a van but it is the same trans as the F-body and I am sure you'll have had the same problem. I am getting no downshift or sluggish downshift with the pedal at WOT. After I get over 10 mph it shifts into 2nd and won't downshift (going through a light, dip, etc.) It used to downshift @ 20-25 mph but not now. I also am getting a weird 2-3 and 3-4 shift. It sort of surges for a couple of seconds while and immediately after shifting. Could this be the converter locking as it only does it under light throttle acceleration. I am thinking it is time for rebuild but just want to verify this. I have checked the TV adjustment and it is set all the way back to as late a shift as possible but still only shifts @ 4,400. Even with the shifter in 1 it shifts @ 4,400. If I need a rebuild what would you do to strengthen the trans for my built up 305 and future 334. This is also the originol early 1984 700r4 with 170,000 miles on it.

 

Changing to a lighter weight governor will give you later WOT shifts, and this should give you the downshifts at the same time.

 

I can't believe that no one has had this problem..... How could it be the governor if it is the same governor it has always had?

 

That is the same kindof problem I started having with my tranny after I installed a 355 horse motor and attached the TV assembly to my Holley carb (from a TBI). After futzing with that damned TV cable forever and the carb geometry I decided to just rebuild the tranny and elinate that variable. It is time anyway with 150k miles.
