Well it finally went in!!
It took about an hour but I finally got the trany in! This was the toughest mating of clutch/ piolet bearing/trany I have had to do. Not that 1 hour is really bad.
I was using a old input shaft as a alighment tool, however, after wrestling with the trany for a bit and it not going the last 1/4-1/2 " the light bulb went on. Maybe the pb/clutch/hole in bellhousing are not concentric. Sure enough, I put the old input shaft back in and measured from the shaft to the edge of the opening in the bell housing and I was off about 1/16-1/8" to the left and down. Gave it a few taps with a dead blow mallet to even thing up. Gave it another shot and Wallah!
It is amazing when you use your noodle how things go so much simpler.
