T56 Clutch not disengaging?

hey, i'm doin a T56 swap in my 89 iroc and have come across a problem. when the car is on the ground, with clutch in it will not go into gear, but if we jack the rear up it goes into gear just fine. now we've noticed the clutch fork to be quite loose. my question is how tight does it need to be? how much play should i have? were pretty sure our clutch isn't fully disengaging when there is resistance (car on teh ground) but like i said once the back wheels are up in the air it runs like a champ.

thanks in advance!

Chances are, that your fork isn't all the pushed onto your throw-out bearing, or, you have a bent fork.

Could also be a problem with your master/slave too.

The fork is heavy duty cast iron, so I doubt you bent it. My guess is that it isn't fully seated in the throwout bearing. This can be a real pain. Use a long screw driver through the slave cylinder hole and spin the bearing if you need to. It has to be just right because of the four flat spots on the fork. It isn't round like normal throwout bearings. You will definately be able to tell when it has seated, becuase the fork will go in and the end will move towards the opening in the case. It is fairly lose in there. The pressure from the slave rod is really what keeps it in place.

thanks for the help, i'll let you know what the problem was when we get it figured out... one thing that we didn't think about was that we used some carb cleaner to get the rust off teh surface of the flexplate and pressure plate (the whole clutch system was put together when i picked it up, so it must have got wet in there and rusted some) so i dunno if the carb cleaner has caused the clutch to stick to it or not... anybody has any ideas on the possibility of that... and how to maybe get it to break loose... thanks!

well, turns out we had the clutch in backwards... but... we must have been sent the wrong clutch... we installed it the way the sticker on the clutch showed "engine side" and with it being installed backwards for one makes me think it's the wrong clutch, and 2 there is a raised part on the back of the clutch where the splines go through, making it impossible for it to work... not sure why we didn't figure all this out the first time but hey, gotta learn sometime, somehow... so anyway, we installed the old clutch and it runs like a champ now... and i'm a VERY happy man
