4th/3rd gen rear end components

are any components interchangable between 4th and 3rdgen 10 bolt rear ends? I am looking to buy a camaro with 3.73s with a nice posi unit, but it has drum brakes, and I have a 96 rear with 3.42s in it.. wondering if the differentials are interchangable.

I havnt looked at them, I'd imagine they're not, but maybe one of you can answer this for me

All 4th gen rears have 28 spline axels. 3rd gens started switching to 28 spline axels in '90, but be careful on cars of the '89-'90 model year because they tend to be hit or miss. Some had 28s, others had 26s.

The axel housing length and axel length on 4th gen cars is wider and longer than 3rd gens. Using 3rd gen wheels on a 4th gen rear in a 3rd gen car results in the tires sticking out past the quarter panels. Ugly everywhere and illegal in most states.

The guts are all the same provided you stick to the info about 28 spline axels. A 4th gen posi will have 28 spline side gears, so you'll either need 3rd gen 28 spline axels or aftermarket axels to make it work if you have 26s now.

4th gen rears have a reluctor wheel for the ABS, but you can just ignore this in a 3rd gen car.

I am unsure what spline axles this one has. I may just have to pick up a disk brake rear from a thirdgen... (non B/W, and sell the 4thgen one.. I am unsure.
