Werid Noise. Need some advise. HELP!

Ok I have never heard of anything like this before.

When I put my car in reverse it makes a loud ticking sound like a lifter tick. It also does it in drive when im cruising down the road, but with my dump open it's harder to hear. Also when I give it gas it does with the motors RPM's. It's most noticeable in reverse.

Anyways though, when I put the car in park or neutral . . . It doesn't do it at all! So that kind of rules out that it's a really bad lifter tick or something motor related.

Is it a cracked flywheel? I pulled the inspection cover off and spun the motor over with a flywheel pulled and I didn't see any cracks. That is what is throwing me off . . . Could it be the torque convertor? Or could the flywheel have a hairline crack not visible by eyes and expends when the motor and trans are spinning together?

Thanks,

Sean

ticking noises could be an exhaust leak somewhere...but beings you said its not there in park or neutral i guess it kind of gets rid of that idea...sorry

I work at Mr. Muffler so I know it's not an exhaust leak because I checked it over and over again.

I'm Clueless! Has anyone had a problem like this or close to this?

I have the same symptoms. Mine is much worse now and must be replaced. Mine started with the ticking noise in reverse and then in drive. It now is very loud and makes more of a clank than a tick. I had it checked by some experts and they all agree t's the TQ. Great so all I need to do now is do that dreaded job of pulling the trans out again.

Let me know if this was also your problem.

theres actualy a gm bullitin about that noise, it was to do with the pump in the tranny because of low pump presure mostly heard in reverse and sometimes in drive.my 700r4 is an 89 and especialy when cold and in reverse i hear it....it did it with my stock converter and my b&m 2400 stall converter.....pre 87 trannys seem to have this issue more since it uses a smaller (less vanes)pump...this is only aplicable to a slight ticking noise not the clack clack clack sound of the flex plate being cracked..

Hey 89RS does the Torque converter cause the clack clack noise? Do you know if a TC that is going bad will destroy the flexplate?
What bulletin was this listed in? I to have an '89 Camaro but it's a Z28.

no the torque converter doesnt cause the loud clack clack, the damage to the flexplate can hapen from loose converter bolts(where the tc is bolted to the plate)or just fatigue, ive seen them crack in almost about anything.it will usualy change pitch and sound when you put it in gear......as for the bulitin its for the quiet tick (kinda like a slight header leak) i will have to find it for ya...

89rs/sc - Thank you so much for that info. It was weird because I put the car up on the hoist, started it and I heard a little bit of rattle from the torque convertor. So I think my convertor may be broken up a little bit inside, but who knows. But I will definatly look into that pump!

Thank you again -

Sean
