Ok a guy I know is selling a 700r for 50 bucks with 121,000 miles on it from an 87 formula. Is this worth it, I was planning on getting a engine around 400-450 hp give or take(trying streetable). I know I should get it rebuilt at least but what else if anything should I do to it I.E. shift kits will the trans hold up even with a bit of upgrading? What are good upgrade for these trans? My car has a 92 firebird (Lo3) 700r in it with 83k but I was planning on using it for a backup/door stop the two trans (87 to a 92)should be compatable right?

Myself, I prefer to stay with 88-up due to a few subtle changes, but the 87 should have most of the newer stuff amking it a good starting point for a build-up.
If you're going to be putting that sort of power to it, there are many things that need attention. I'd contact Dana at pro-built for the details, the guy know's what he's doing! www.pro-built.net

cool thanks for the link
How hard would it be to rebuild the trans by myself? I rebuilt a turbo 350 about 4 years ago in high school auto but A) it was out of the car and B) we never tested it out, just put the new stuff in. Or would it be better just to pull it and take to a trans shop?

Trans shop is going to take you the cleaners... and that doesn't mean they're going to do a good job either for the money spent. Even if it takes you four times as long to do the work, you love your car and can give the transmission rebuild the attention it needs to make the tranny a worry free section of the car when you pushing serious power. www.pro-built.net like already said - talk to Dana.

Please take it easy on the shops! We aren't out to "Take you to the cleaner's".
Automatic transmission work can be pretty in depth. Just a standard overhaul is generally easy, but to build one to stand up to decent power, it takes much more detail than a shop will be willing to put into it. I know that I'm going to have MANY more hours in building my transmission for my Camaro than I put into stock overhauls. Most shops don't do the caliber of work it takes to handle the hihger power levels, and if they do, it's pretty expensive due to the amount of time involved.

I was gonna take it to a trans shop (if I do) called Sams transmissions in aurora IL that does good work. The guy I work with had his 54 ford 3 speed manual trans fixed, 700r in his maro fixed and he's done alot of "performance" trans work, also has a photo wall of all the cool cars and what they have done to em.
